The First Church of God in Chilhowie, Virginia had the "VISION that God was calling the Church to greater heights in ministry. We want to be more than a "presence in our community. He is calling us to be "salt and "light in today's world. As we continue to grow, new facilities are needed to serve our current congregation and expand into other community related ministries. A timeline of "VISION events is detailed on this page and as construction progresses pictures have been posted to the Photo Page.
The option to expand the 1121 W. Lee Highway facility or relocate to another place was evaluated and the decision was made to relocate. The decision to relocate was influenced by the following limitations: parking; sanctuary seating; classrooms; space for youth activities and introduction of new ministries. On March 5th, 2000, the Church met in a special business meeting and voted to purchase new land.
On May 17, 2001, the church purchased a five-acre track of land at the corner of Old Stage Road and Highway #107, behind the new Post Office. This is the original tract of land the church tried to purchase before building our current facility.
The "Time to Build campaign was launched. On April 28, 2003, the Building Committee agreed on the initial design by Cameron Wolfe. This design included a two phased project. Phase I would be a multi-purpose facility, including classrooms and offices, for the Church and Christian Day Care Center. That structure would be approximately 23,000 square feet. Phase II would be a 10,000 square feet structure housing the Sanctuary and more classrooms.
On May 9, 2004, the congregation, after reviewing the concept drawings and model, gave its approval to move ahead with the new facility.
A Ground Breaking was held at the new property on September 11, 2005. The featured participants were Pastor Dunn, Pastor Taylor, Bob Elmore, Scotty Hopkins, Jim Sawyer and Sarah Chapman.
Grading of the site was completed.
In June bids were reviewed and the decision was made to re-evaluate the initial design. The plans were changed and on August 19, 2007, the revised plans were accepted in a Special Called Business Meeting. The revised plan included approximately 19,000 square feet and basically was the same as the original Phase I less some classrooms. A concept drawing of the revised building footprint is located under the "Photo" page. Then on August 20, 2007, the financial portion of the "Time To Build was restarted by obtaining new commitments. Also, in September 2007, the current facility and the apartments were listed for sale.
On February 28, 2008, construction financing was finalized with BB&T and on May 12, 2008, the construction contract with H.S. Williams was formalized.
As noted in Volume 13, Number 3 (March, April, and May 2008) Adult Bible Study from Warner Press, Inc., "All dreams begin with a vision of what might be. Then comes a plan of action. The action must be initiated and brought to completion. The success of the dream depends upon the whole process. The vision must be clear, the plan workable, support and cooperation engaged, work begun and completed. The First Church of God, Chilhowie has been committed to the completion of that "VISION. There were many people involved with the whole process from 2000 until 2008 and the final Building Committee consisted of Bob Elmore, Scotty Hopkins, Ed Stanberry, Gary Sutherland, Merrill Ward, Doug Bachuss, Jake Harris, Jackie Dunn, Pastor Bobby Dunn, John Burrows, Doug Bise, Harold Porter and Pastor Mike Potter.
